Toronto's Recycling Crisis: 11 Days and Counting (2026)

Imagine this: Your recycling bins are overflowing, and the collection truck is nowhere to be seen. This is the reality for some Toronto residents, with recycling piling up for days due to a new, privatized system.

This story comes from a recent report, where one frustrated resident, Keaton Crouse, shared his experience. He's dealing with 11 days of uncollected recycling, a problem that's impacting his neighborhood.

Before the change on January 1st, Crouse's recycling was picked up without fail. Now, with Circular Materials taking over, his bins are overflowing, and his neighbors are in the same boat. He's even seen his neighbor using his bin because of the lack of space.

"They're overflowing. People have bags next to it. They've got boxes all over the place," Crouse explained. The situation is so bad that it's taking up a significant portion of the sidewalk.

But here's where it gets controversial: The switch to Circular Materials has led to widespread missed pickups, with thousands of stops reportedly skipped across the city. Ontario Premier Doug Ford has defended the transition, citing cost savings, despite the disruptions. He attributed the problems to communication issues between the city and Circular Materials.

However, Crouse notes that his garbage and compost, still managed by the city, are being collected on schedule. He's skeptical that his next recycling pickup will happen as scheduled.

Circular Materials acknowledges 'start-up challenges,' with CEO Allen Langdon and GFL Environmental Founder and CEO Patrick Dovigi vowing to resolve the issues. They're committed to 'delivering reliable recycling collection.'

And this is the part most people miss: Crouse hopes the issue is resolved quickly and that Circular Materials takes responsibility. He worries about the impact on the city, including the potential for increased issues with wildlife.

What do you think? Do you agree with the Premier's defense of the new system, or do you side with the residents experiencing these issues? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
