Baraka Chacha Mwita, detained since October 30, 2025, faces a dire situation: he is unable to walk due to broken legs, allegedly sustained during or after his arrest. His family is now speaking out, hoping to bring attention to his plight and secure his release. Images of Baraka being carried into court, unable to walk even with crutches, have circulated widely, sparking public debate. His sister, Catherine Johannes, spoke to the press on December 22, 2025, outside Kisutu Magistrate’s Court, painting a grim picture of her brother's condition. "Both of his legs were broken," she stated, adding that one leg has a cast, and the other a metal rod. She described the daily struggle of his detention, where he needs assistance even for basic needs. "I feel like even the person carrying him is getting tired. Every day he is lifted up and brought down," she continued.
But here's where it gets controversial: The charges against Baraka are serious: treason. The family is told that the investigation files are incomplete, and the case keeps getting postponed. This is the fourth time he has appeared in court, only to be sent back. Advocate Paul Kisabo explained that Baraka is one of sixteen individuals arraigned before the Resident Magistrate’s Court. The charges against three of the accused were amended from treason to arson, relating to allegations of burning down CCM party offices in Bwera-Kivule. The court has ordered medical treatment for Mwita, as he had not received adequate care since his initial visit to Amana Hospital.
