Bold claim: Fox’s Baywatch reboot is turning a familiar name into a familiar face, with Stephen Amell stepping into Hobie Buchannon’s red swimsuit and high-stakes legacy. But here’s where it gets controversial: is recasting a beloved franchise with a new血line a winning move or a nostalgic trap? Here’s a clearer, expanded take that keeps the original meaning intact while making it accessible for newcomers.
Fox’s Baywatch reboot has cast Stephen Amell to star, and he’ll be portraying Hobie Buchannon, the son of Mitch Buchannon—the iconic lifeguard head from the original series. In the classic show, Hobie was played by Brandon Call and later Jeremy Jackson. The new version reintroduces Hobie as a Baywatch Captain who follows in his father’s legendary footsteps. The official character description adds a dramatic twist: Hobie’s world is upended when he meets Charlie, the daughter he never knew, who arrives seeking to carry on the Buchannon legacy and become a Baywatch lifeguard alongside her father.
Fox announced the project’s path in September, revealing a straight-to-series order for 12 episodes. Matt Nix, known for Burn Notice, will serve as showrunner. The original Baywatch—famed for its California beach-set lifeguard stories—was canceled after one NBC season but soared to international fame in syndication, spanning 11 seasons and helping launch the careers of Pamela Anderson, Yasmine Bleeth, Nicole Eggert, and others.
Amell is stepping to the fore to lead a new generation of Baywatch lifeguards. Best known for his role as Oliver Queen, a.k.a. Green Arrow, on The CW’s Arrow, Amell has since led Starz’s Heels and NBC’s SuitsLA, with other TV credits including Private Practice, New Girl, and The Vampire Diaries.
Showrunner Matt Nix praised Amell, saying from the first conversation he brought the core elements the new Baywatch needs: heart, intensity, and unmistakable hero energy. Nix added that Amell can sprint into danger, carry emotional weight, and still keep the tone buoyant and fun. The reboot aims to recapture the adrenaline-fueled rescues, tangled relationships, and beachside heroics that defined the original, but with an entirely new cast, updated aesthetics, fresh tensions, and a renewed mission to protect Southern California’s shoreline.
What do you think: would Amell’s Hobie revitalize the Baywatch world, or does the idea of a new cast in familiar red swimsuits miss the mark? Share your thoughts and whether you’re excited to see how this reboot balances nostalgia with new adventures.
