A dark cloud hangs over the European Water Polo Championships as allegations of match-fixing involving Malta's national team surface. This news, reported by the Times of Malta, has sent ripples of concern throughout the aquatic sports community. But what exactly is happening?
It's alleged that members of Malta's men's water polo team are under investigation for potentially manipulating the outcome of their matches at the European Championships in Belgrade. This year marks the 37th edition of the championship and a significant milestone: its 100th anniversary!
The investigation centers around suspicions that players placed bets on their own games and then attempted to influence the results to match their wagers. Specifically, the opening game against Montenegro is under scrutiny. Montenegro ultimately won with a score of 21-12. The players allegedly aimed to ensure the final score, including the goal difference, aligned with their bets to secure winnings. Around four players are currently suspected.
But here's where it gets controversial... While the focus is currently on the Malta-Montenegro match, further investigation might expand to include subsequent games where the suspected players participated. The Authority for Integrity in Maltese Sport is reportedly looking into the matter, although they haven't publicly confirmed an official investigation.
The Aquatic Sports Association of Malta (ASA), through its president, Karl Izzo, has confirmed that they haven't received any formal complaints or notifications about these allegations. Izzo, who also serves as Malta’s non-resident ambassador to Montenegro, emphasized that the allegations are just that: allegations. He stated that they must be taken seriously, but they remain unproven until the competent authorities establish the truth.
Izzo expressed his hope that these claims are unfounded, stating that any confirmed wrongdoing would be deeply disappointing and would unfairly damage the ASA's efforts to advance aquatic sports. The ASA has committed to cooperating with any investigation and will take necessary steps to protect the sport's integrity.
And this is the part most people miss... The ASA urges caution and respect for due process in public discussions and reporting until the investigation concludes.
