Golden State Valkyries Appoint Denise Romero as VP of Basketball Administration | WNBA News (2026)

In a striking move that promises to reshape the future of basketball operations, the Golden State Valkyries have officially appointed Denise Romero as their new Vice President of Basketball Administration. This announcement marks a significant milestone for the organization, as Romero brings with her an impressive background with over 20 years of experience in basketball administration and logistics, having worked in both the NBA and WNBA arenas. She will be reporting directly to Ohemaa Nyanin, the General Manager of the Valkyries.

"Denise embodies over two decades of expertise in establishing systems and fostering relationships that ensure our basketball operations run smoothly," stated Nyanin in a recent press release. "Her strong background in logistics, team coordination, and nurturing a positive organizational culture will undoubtedly enhance our operational effectiveness and support our dedicated staff as we continue to develop this franchise. We’re incredibly excited to welcome someone with her extensive experience to the Valkyries family."

In her new position, Romero will take charge of all administrative facets related to basketball operations, with a particular focus on managing the internal dynamics of the Valkyries’ basketball operations team. Additionally, she will act as a crucial bridge between various departments, including basketball operations, business development, and the larger Golden State organization.

Before joining the Valkyries, Romero devoted more than twenty years to the Phoenix Suns and Mercury organizations. Her most recent role was as the Team Travel & Logistics Manager for Player 15 Group, where she was responsible for coordinating all travel logistics for the Suns. From 2016 to 2022, she made significant contributions as the Equipment Operations Assistant and Travel Coordinator for the Suns, notably breaking barriers in 2016 by becoming the first woman to serve as an Equipment Manager in the NBA. Romero initially joined the Suns organization in 2003, and just two years later, she was elevated to the role of Basketball Operations Manager and Equipment Manager for the Mercury, where she dedicated 15 years (2003-2019) managing all aspects of team activities, from practices to transportation, accommodations, and flights—all while providing essential support to the coaching staff.

Romero earned her Bachelor of Science degree in tourism and recreation management from Arizona State University, adding yet another layer to her well-rounded professional profile.

But here’s where it gets intriguing: how will Romero's vast experience impact the Valkyries' strategy moving forward? Could her tenure lead to a new era for the franchise that challenges existing norms in basketball operations? We’d love to hear your thoughts!
