The exiled crown prince of Iran, Reza Pahlavi, has issued a powerful call to the international community, urging them to support the protesters in their quest to overthrow the Iranian government. With unwavering conviction, Pahlavi asserts, 'The Islamic Republic will fall, not a question of if, but when.'
Based in the United States, Pahlavi is an influential opposition leader. He proposes 'surgical' strikes on Iran's Revolutionary Guards, believing this strategy will not only aid the protesters' cause but also prevent further loss of life. The protests, which began over economic issues on December 28, have evolved into a broader movement demanding the end of Supreme Leader Ali Hosseini Khamenei's rule.
Human rights organizations report that over 2,000 protesters have tragically lost their lives, while the Iranian government dismisses these demonstrations as 'riots' orchestrated by foreign adversaries. Pahlavi, a prominent figure in Iran's opposition, has previously encouraged Iranians to intensify their protests.
However, the authorities have responded with deadly force, exacerbating the situation by imposing a near-total internet and communication blackout. In a recent press conference in Washington, Pahlavi expressed his determination to return to Iran and outlined a vision for a new constitution.
He revealed that segments of Iran's security apparatus had refused to participate in the crackdown, and that foreign militias had been deployed to suppress the protests. When asked about the future leadership of Iran, Pahlavi emphasized the importance of the Iranian people's decision-making process, stating, 'I am striving to assist them in their journey towards liberation.'
Pahlavi's governing philosophy is grounded in the principles of Iran's territorial integrity, the separation of religion and state, individual liberties, and the Iranian people's right to choose their preferred democratic government. The current wave of protests began when shopkeepers in Tehran struck due to the escalating cost of living and the declining value of the currency.
These protests swiftly spread across the country, targeting the clerical establishment, particularly Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. The demonstrators' chants included 'Death to the dictator' and 'Seyyed Ali [Khamenei] will be toppled this year.' According to the Human Rights Activists News Agency (HRANA), a minimum of 2,453 protesters have tragically lost their lives, including 14 children, 156 individuals associated with the security forces or government, and 14 innocent civilians. Additionally, 18,470 protesters have been arrested.
